About Children Are Butterflies

The Charity’s Objectives

Children Are Butterflies work for the public benefit to relieve some of the burden to families in times of emotional and financial hardship following the death of a child.

Our principal objectives are:

  1. The provision of financial relief to families in the UK who are in the unfortunate position of having to organise the funeral of a child. This relief comes in the form of Funeral Disbursements Grants.
  2. Promotion of the Charity and the work we do, to increase the awareness and understanding of the plight that bereaved families find themselves in, particularly to Funeral and Health Professionals.
  3. To build a “Butterfly Community” and encourage mutual support through frank and open discussion between families with similar experiences, in a safe and welcoming environment.
Achieving our objectives ...

We will achieve these objectives with the following measures:

1. The rules regarding the issuing and allocation of our financial support:

    1. Provision of financial relief will be granted only:
      1. For funerals of children under the age of 18 years, including babies later than 12 weeks gestation.
      2. To families resident in the UK – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
      3. Upon receipt of an application form that has been completed in full, with all the disbursements listed and verified by the family’s Funeral Director.
    2. Contributions to funeral expenses will be considered only:
      1. Towards a single, standard funeral vehicle.
      2. Towards a basic coffin (in the case of baby between 12 and 24 week gestation only)
      3. In respect of Standard Funeral Disbursements, other than burial and cremation fees.
        1. Standard funeral disbursements are: Church fees, celebrant or minister fees, organist fees.
(It is quite usual for these fees to be waived or reduced for a child’s funeral.)
        2. Standard funeral disbursements ARE NOT: Funeral Director professional fees, funeral printing, vehicles, flowers, press notices, memorials, catering and anything else, considered by the trustees, not to be essential to a basic funeral.
      4. To a maximum value capped at £500 per funeral.

2. Promotion of the Charity will be achieved by:

    1. An active presence on social media.
    2. An informative and effective website.
    3. Publicity within the Funeral Industry.
    4. Publicity within Bereavement Services.
    5. Exploiting opportunities within the media.
    6. Word of Mouth.

3. The “Butterfly Community” will be encouraged through:

    1. The existing forum on the website.
    2. The Annual Butterfly Release, and other events local to Northampton.
    3. Support to those in the wider Butterfly Community who may wish to organise events in other areas.
    4. A “closed” Facebook Group.

Where Does The Money Go … ?

Full disclosure on our responsibilities and governance here at Children Are Butterflies

The Team Take No Salary

We keep it simple at Children Are Butterflies, as we believe that as much as physically possible of the funds raised needs to go families in need, so our small team of Trustees and supporters take no salary. So apart from a few expenses to keep this website “on air”, and for very occasional printing and promotional material, all the money raised is available to provide financial assistance to bereaved families.

Ann Farmer

Founder, Trustee and Partner/Funeral Director at Hollowells

Ann runs Children Are Butterflies alongside her commitments as a Partner at Hollowells Funeral Directors. It is the immense support of her family at Hollowells that allows Children Are Butterflies to operate in this way. Ann has built a reputation in Northampton for her work with children’s funerals and conducts many within the town, and this is the very reason the charity exists. Hence why a fair proportion of the financial assistance is taken up locally.

Jon Farmer

Trustee, Ann’s husband, Tech Support & Photography

Jon is a photographer and works part time for Hollowells as a Health and Safety Adviser. He provides technical and practical support where necessary for the charity. This website was built and is managed by Jon and much of the photography has been provided by Jon.

Anne-Marie Noel
Trustee, Long Term Friend & Supporter

Anne-Marie is a school nurse and Mum to two girls, Alice and Lucy, and has previous experience as a paediatric nurse. Importantly though she has been a long term member of our Butterfly Community following the tragic loss of little Grace Amelia, so will bring a great deal of understanding and empathy to her role as Trustee.

Peter Wyllie
Trustee, Spokesman

Peter has been a friend to Children Are Butterflies, to the Trustees, and to the Butterfly Community itself for a long time now. He is a Civil Celebrant and will be a familiar face to many of the Butterfly Community local to Northampton as he has officiated at many children’s funerals. Peter has a history in sales, training and public speaking so will bring some much needed skills to the team.

Rachael Markham
Trustee, Bookkeeper

As a self employed bookkeeper looking after the accounts for a variety of businesses, Rachael has broad experience of accounting. As one of the businesses she looks after is Hollowells Funeral Directors, she has been close to Children Are Butterflies for many years now. We are so pleased to bring Rachael on board, as her accounts experience will be invaluable as the charity begins this next chapter.

Your Questions Answered …

How Do You Assess The Application For Assistance?

There are strict rules for what costs can be applied for, and there are many things that we deem not applicable for assistance. With Ann’s and Clare’s intimate knowledge of the funeral process, assessing the application and deciding on the final grant is agreed between them. Fees for certain items vary nationally so all submitted forms are verified and endorsed by the applicant’s Funeral Director.

How Do You Ensure Grants Are Used Appropriately?

We issue grants all over the country so of course we do not know the applicants personally, so there would be an element of risk if we sent funds to the applicants directly. That is why we insist that all the fees that are being applied for are verified by the family’s Funeral Director, and the final grant cheques are sent to the family but made out to the Funeral Director that is carrying out the funeral.
